Meadow Lake Fall Festival re-ignites desire for community events

Sep 19, 2021 | 1:10 PM

The most recent public gathering in Meadow Lake has some residents yearning for more community-unifying events.

Over the weekend, masked and socially distanced residents of Meadow Lake and the surrounding area came together on Centre Street to celebrate the second annual Fall Festival.

The event featured musical performances from The Dirt Road Maniacs and The Ramblers, and a lineup of several booths from local vendors and organizations, including the Meadow Lake RCMP Youth Advisory Committee and the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation.

This comes at a time when the Government of Saskatchewan re-introduced a province-wide mask mandate and announced plans to implement a new COVID-19 proof of vaccination system.

Austin, a resident attending the festival, said having this event provided people in the area with some relief before the province implements more restrictive guidelines.

“It’s a breath of fresh air. It brings me back,” he said.

“Even though stuff is going back to how it was a few months ago, this gives you a break and a little bit of the realization that we can sit back and chill out for a bit so we can come together as a community.”

In a previous interview with meadowlakeNOW, Festival Organizer Tammy Wigton explained she wanted to help reduce the social anxiety brought on by a year of staying at home before cooler temperatures sweep over the region.

Another festival-goer, Katerina, said the lack of community events often results in the community wrapping up nights much earlier than she would like.

“They should have more events like this, as long as people are wearing masks,” she said.

“Meadow Lake is pretty much dead after six o’clock, so I think they need to liven up the community and have more events like this.”

The event kicked off on Friday evening with festivities wrapping up Saturday afternoon.
