Flock of flamingos visiting Melfort residents this fall

A flock of flamingos has taken up residence in Melfort to help the Kinettes and Kinsmen clubs raise funds for community projects.

The bright pink group of 20 plastic flamingos arrived in the city on Thursday where they landed in the front yard of an unexpecting home.

Melfort Kinettes President Briana MacLean told northeastNOW the fundraiser aims to bring some light and fun around town.

“We had such great success with our toilet drop in the wintertime for TeleMiracle, we figured a similar idea could help us bring in some funds while brightening someone’s day,” MacLean said.

For a $30 donation to the Kinette club, members of the group will “flock” the front yard of a residence. A letter of explanation is delivered along with the flock.

Residents who are visited by the flock are then able to make a $10 donation to find out who sent the birds their way. The flock will migrate after 48 hours of arrival and move on to another welcoming yard.

“It is all done in good spirits and is not meant to be mean in anyway,” MacLean said.

With many of the larger fundraising events typically hosted by the Melfort Kinsmen and Kinette groups on hold since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the groups have had to think of ways to safely raise money.

A car bingo hosted by the Kinettes on July 1 at the Melfort fair grounds was a huge success, with around 55 cars in attendance. Several Melfort businesses got on board as game cash prize sponsors as well as raffle prize sponsors.

With the success of the first car bingo, discussions and planning are underway within the group to have another one, possibly in the spring.

“We don’t have the funds from the car bingo or the flocking earmarked for anything specific right now, but it will definitely go back into the community like usual,” MacLean said.

The Kin groups of Melfort have been able to support many playground builds in the past as well as providing scholarships for post secondary funding to high school graduates each year, and many other community initiatives.

To flock a friend, family member, co-worker, etc., orders are being taken through email at melfortkinettesservice@gmail.com or by texting Angie at 306-281-2843 or Jessica at 306-209-5128.

“The flock will be in the community at least until the snow flies,” MacLean said.

MacLean mentioned this is a great way to send someone a surprise for their birthday, a special occassion, or to simply put a smile on their face.

Keep up to date with the flock on the Melfort Kinettes Facebook page.
