Taste of Culture event returns to the Battlefords

Food lovers will have an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of dishes from around the world when Taste of Culture returns to the Battlefords on Saturday.

The event will take place at the Agrivilla and Agriplex at the Exhibition Grounds from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Annette McGovern, executive director of Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre, the host of the event, says people attending will need to wear masks for COVID-19 regulations.

“It is still going ahead, but due to COVID and restrictions we weren’t allowed to have entertainment, because they would be confined to a small building,” she said. “So we are having the vendors and the vending tables, and a little bit of entertainment on a screen, the music, and drinks will be it for this year.”

The event was cancelled last year due to the province’s requirements.

People will be able to eat their meal at the venue, but there will be only a few tables available since they will be spaced apart for social distancing. So visitors are encouraged to take their meal to go, or enjoy it at one of the picnic tables outside.

McGovern said the organizers will watch to ensure there are no more than 50 people in the hall at the same time.

There will be about seven different food booths at the event, including varieties of Ukrainian, Chinese, Filipino, Ruthenian and Indian cuisine. People can also visit some of the market place booths that will be set up at the venue. A silent auction is also planned.

The Taste of Culture event also coincides with Culture Days in Saskatchewan this month.

McGovern is excited the Immigration Resource Centre is able to offer the event again. She thanks all the corporate sponsors for their support, as well as SaskCulture, a significant contributor to the event.

“This is one of the bigger events we do for the community,” she said. “We bring all the cultures in the community together.”

McGovern said hopefully next year the COVID-19 situation will be over, and the organizers will be able to have a much larger event.
