North Stars travel to Kindersley as rivalry weekend continues

Sep 25, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Coming off a 3-1 victory over the Klippers in their home opener Friday, the Battlefords North Stars will travel to Kindersley Saturday for the back-half of the teams’ home-and-home to start the season.

After much talk highlighting the Stars depth of offensive attack, with 18 different goal scorers over the team’s seven preseason games, the Stars picked up where they left off in their opener, with three different goal scorers in Friday’s 3-1 win.

Emmett Wurst, Steven Kesslering and KT Walters led the way for the team with a goal apiece in the victory, with Wurst and Kesslering making up two-thirds of the team’s ‘fourth line’ to start – along with Matthew Henry – which has since been promoted to a top six position, Saturday.

In a season which promises to be one of many milestones, Wurst and Walters were also the first this year to score their first career junior goals. That leaves still 12 players on Saturday’s 18 skater roster, hungry for their first SJHL marker.

Much of Saturday’s lineup will remain unchanged from the opener, aside from a swap moving Ethan Scriven to the left of Holden Doell and Ryland McNinch. Jake Southgate meanwhile, will then move to the flank of Dylan Esau and Walters.

More than anything the move is likely due to the chemistry Scriven showed while alongside the former Beardy’s Blackhawks’ duo (Doell and McNinch) once Southgate was escorted out of Friday’s contest midway through the third, due to what was deemed as a hit from behind.

However, the move also showcases the team’s depth, with four lines that can carry the brunt of the offensive workload on any given night.

In goal, the First Star and P&H Performer of the game from Friday, goaltender Cam Beson will get the start again for the team, for the second-straight night.

Stopping 30 of 31 Klippers shots in the opener, Beson was especially brilliant keeping the team in the game early, while Kinderlsey held the advantage on the power play, stopping 15/16 first period shots to weather the storm.

While the defensive pairings remain unchanged, forward Aiden Arnold will make his SJHL debut with the team, in place of Zane Florence on the right wing in the Stars’ forward corpse.

A standout player with quick hands from the Warman Wildcats Triple-A program, and Saskatoon Ice Hawks of Double-A prior to that, Arnold picked up 51 points in 33 games his final year of Double-A in 2019-20. He will line up to the right of Tanner Klimpke and Ryder Kenyon on a fourth unit brim with speed, skill and tenacity.

Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
