Broncos cap off opening home and home with hometown win in Humboldt

The SJHL season is now underway with teams rocking arenas all over Saskatchewan this weekend.

This included the Humboldt Broncos who kicked off their regular season with home-and-home wins against the Notre Dame Hounds, including their home opener on Sept. 25.

Following a 5-1 win in Wilcox, the Hounds struck first at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA) eight minutes into the first period. The Broncos were quick to answer back in their 9–3 victory.

The Hounds picked up some momentum in the third period with two more goals added to their final score but it would be too little, too late.

Head coach Scott Barney said his boys came out hungry to start the season.

“Overall the guys played pretty hard there and, you know, the third period is tough to play when you’re in a lead like that so I think, you know just happy the guys were getting chemistry and, you know from goalie right up to the defense and forwards, I’m really happy,” Barney told northeastNOW.

This was the first regular-season game for 17 new Broncos and Barney is excited to see how they gel during the upcoming season, he said.

One of the new players acquired by the Broncos back in August was Connor McGrath .

The LeRoy product is currently leading the team in points following the back-to-back games against Notre Dame with two goals and four assists; three of which were made on home ice.

McGrath grew up playing minor hockey at the EPA so to be able to continue his career on his home ice has been really exciting, he said.

“To wear the logo again means a lot to me,” McGrath told northeastNOW.

While it is too early in the season to make predictions for the season, McGrath said the way the lines have been contributing offensively and creating that chemistry, as well as having Rayce Ramsey between the pipes, the Broncos have been making a name for themselves as contenders.

The Broncos also announced their leadership for the season this past week with Kade Olsen being named team captain, as well as Braiden Koran, Logan Kurki, and Noah Barlage being named assistant captains.

The Broncos organization also took the time during the opening ceremonies to acknowledge and thank Leslie and Ron Cornell for their leadership on the Humboldt Urban Garden Sanctuary Project at the Humboldt and District Health Complex and pay tribute to the 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos will be hitting the road with away games in North Battleford and Kindersley coming up next weekend. The green and gold will be back at the EPA on Oct. 9 when they welcome the Battleford North Stars to the barn.
