École Monseigneur Blaise Morand (EMBM) is temporarily moving to remote learning due to increased positive COVID-19 case numbers at the school.

A Sept. 26 letter to parents and caregivers from Light of Christ Catholic School Division posted on the school’s Facebook page indicated the entire EMBM school would be moving to remote learning effective immediately.

“We understand that this is sudden, and likely inconvenient. However, without this break, we anticipate continued transmission and rising case numbers at the school,” Light of Christ Catholic School Division Director of Education Cory Rideout stated.

The school will return to in-person learning Oct. 12.

On Sept. 7 the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) reported EMBM experienced an outbreak, which is identified as two or more positive cases.

Parent Lynnette Tatton who has three children attending EMBM told battlefordsNOW she is pleased with the school division’s decision to move to remote learning.

“I feel the school has made the right choice,” she said. “I’m sure it’s not easy for them to make that call. But I do feel like it’s the correct call.”

Tatton didn’t have any concerns when EMBM, similar to many other schools in the province, opened for the start of school year with in-person learning, since there were precautions in place.

She said that since children under age 12 are not eligible for vaccination they are a more vulnerable group unfortunately.

“It is just too bad. Kids are vulnerable because they are not vaccinated, most of them, because they can’t be,” she said. “So I feel [the school division] made the call with the amount of cases presented at the school, and they made the right decision.”

COVID-19 numbers continue to remain high in the region overall.

As of Sept. 26, Saskatchewan’s North-West region, which includes North Battleford and Lloydminster, had 672 active cases, the second highest in the province after Saskatoon, based on the latest report.
