Ice Wolves to wear orange jerseys during Thursday home game

It will be a special night Thursday for the La Ronge Ice Wolves as the team honours the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Ice Wolves will be up against the Battleford North Stars at the Mel Hegland Uniplex for their third game of the regular season and players will wear orange jerseys to raise awareness and funds for a yet to be determined local cause. The Treaty Six and Reconciliation flags will also be hung that night in the facility.

Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminki said those who attend Thursday are encouraged to wear orange too.

“It’s going to be a pretty special night on Thursday,” he said, noting the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League recognizes the longstanding support it has received from Indigenous fans.

Air Ronge and La Ronge councils have already each pledged $1,000 towards purchasing the jerseys, which will be worn during three games this season before being auctioned during parent’s weekend celebrations. Thursdays game is meant to be used as a platform to emphasize, acknowledge and reaffirm the Ice Wolves’ commitment towards reconciliation.

So far, the Ice Wolves have lost their first two games of the regular season, which began Sept. 24 in La Ronge against the Nipawin Hawks. The team lost that game 5-4, then travelled to Nipawin Sept. 25 where they lost 5-1.

“Both games we did a lot of good things, but we got to try and play with the lead instead of both games we’re down 3-0 and we have to play catch up hockey,” he said. “We got to build off the good things and get better from the mistakes we made and don’t let it happen again. It’s early and we just have to get everyone on the same page here pulling in the same direction.”

The home opener attracted a crowd of approximately 550 fans and Kaminski explained they were treated to an exciting game. He said there were nice plays, and it was hard hitting back and forth action.
