North Stars double up Hounds 6-3 in return to home ice

The Battlefords North Stars topped the Notre Dame Hounds 6-3 Tuesday night, in North Battleford.

Local standout, Jake Southgate led the way with two goals on the night, while fellow hometowner, Zane Florence notched his first career tally, and Steven Kesslering, Dace Prymak, and Emmett Wurst also scored for the team.

Between the pipes, Ulrik Roussel turned aside 23 of the 26 shots he faced on the night for the win.

Hounds’ forward, Elliot Dutil scored twice, with two assists in the loss for Notre Dame, while Brenden Kerr added one of his own, and goalie Joe Kuchaslo made 27 saves on 33 shots in the defeat.

With the win, the North Stars improve to 2-0-1 to open the season, while Notre Dame fall to 0-3.

Kesslering’s second of the season opened the scoring for the Stars, coming off a quick wrist shot from the deep slot, to make it 1-0 early. Coming just over two minutes into the first, the goal was scored on the team’s opening shot of the night.

After Kerr tied things for the Hounds on a breakaway just a couple of minutes later, the Stars again struck – just two minutes after that – as Prymak cashed in on a partial breakaway of his own, in his first game with the team this season. This made it 2-1 Battlefords.

Jake Southgate’s first made it 3-1 Stars on a centering feed to Prymak, that deflected in off a defenceman’s skate in front. His second followed just over three minutes later, in highlight-reel fashion, off a quick shot while blazing down the right wing, to make it 4-1.

While the lone goal of the middle period went the way of the visitors (Dutil’s first of the night), to make it a 4-2 game, the Stars pulled away in the third.

Not quite half way through the third period, Zane Florence snapped a quick shot low, that increased the lead to 5-2, breaking the proverbial camel’s back. Although Florence tied for the team lead in goals during the preseason, the marker served as the winger’s first career SJHL goal in the regular season.

Emmett Wurst’s fourth of the season made it 6-2, marking the third straight game Wurst has scored at least a single goal to start the season.

While Notre Dame would get one more back, on Dutil’s second of the night, the game would finish 6-3 the final.

The North Stars will now get a day off to rest and regroup, before returning to action Thursday in La Ronge versus the Ice Wolves.
