MANDATORY VACCINATIONS

Melfort making vaccinations mandatory for city employees

Employees with the City of Melfort are being mandated to get vaccinations to continue the fight against COVID-19.

Mayor Glenn George told northeastNOW the decision was officially made this morning at a special council meeting but its something they have been working on for a few weeks.

“We try to do what is right for everybody and I’m sure it will upset some people, but this is what we had to do and we are doing it,” George said.

The policy that applies to employees, staff, interns, students, council, and contractors will come into effect on Friday, Oct. 1. All employees must comply on or before Nov. 22.

“The Nov. 22 date will allow time for anyone who is not yet vaccinated to choose to do so before the policy comes into effect,” George said.

After Nov. 22, anyone working in a city facility must provide proof of vaccination or provide a certified verification of a negative COVID-19 test.

“We as elected officials and city administration need to do what is right for the general public period,” George said. “We want to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace and provide a safe environment for employees and the public to access and use city facilities.”

The province of Saskatchewan will require residents to show proof of vaccination starting on Friday for places like restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and sporting events.
