Triple-A Sharks to wrap preseason with weekend showcase in Swift Current

The Battlefords Triple-A Sharks will travel to Swift Current this weekend to wrap their preseason schedule with a league showcase.

Featuring all seven teams from the Saskatchewan Female Under-18 AAA Hockey League (SFU18AAAHL), including Saskatoon, Regina, Weyburn, Prince Albert, Notre Dame and Swift Current, in addition to the Battlefords.

Director with the Sharks, Jeanne Gilchrist said the weekend’s action is an opportunity the players are looking forward to.

“The girls are really excited to go to Swift Current this weekend and showcase all their talents,” she said. “Since we didn’t get to have a season last year, a lot of our girls — other than really our third-year-veterans — haven’t played much Triple-A hockey outside of maybe a couple of games last year. So they’re just all anxious to get playing again.”

The Sharks, who opened their preseason at the U18 AAA Firestarter tournament in Calgary, Alta. earlier this month, will be looking to close their exhibition schedule on a high note. The team will be in search of their first win, after going 0-2-2 through four tightly contested contests through their first four games.

Gilchrist said while the team may still be looking for that first ‘W,’ it’s only a matter of time, as there’s been plenty to like about the way the group has come together and their competitive nature up and down the lineup.

“They’re very cohesive as a team, and very invested in each other as teammates which is what makes a good team,” she said. “Not just the play on the ice, but how they are on and off the ice. They’re a very dedicated group, and they want to play and do well, and ultimately they want to win.”

The Sharks will play two games this weekend in Swift Current, Saturday, Oct. 2 vs the hosts, and Sunday, Oct. 3 versus Regina.

The Sharks will then get the better part of a week ahead of their regular season opener Friday, Oct. 9. Playing a back-to-back versus Swift Current at Battleford Arena, Oct. 9 and 10, Saturday’s home opener will begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday’s game an afternoon contest with puck drop at 1:30 p.m.
