Hawks play host to rival Mustangs

The Nipawin Hawks and Mustangs will renew their rivalry Friday when the teams clash at the Centennial Arena.

The contest is the first of ten games the teams will face this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season and the first of back-to-back matchups this weekend. Nipawin comes into the weekend with a perfect start to the season at 3-0. Reigning SJHL defenseman of the week Evan Bortis said all aspects of the team’s games this year have been executed well.

“We started strong, we’ve gotten pucks deep, moved our feet, got lots of shots on goal that created goals,” he said.

The Mustangs come in with a record of 2-1 after a split with Flin Flon on their opening weekend and a victory over Yorkton on Tuesday. Bortis said the Hawks will need to stick with their current game plan.

“We need to do what we were doing before; good break outs, good clean passes, and come together as a team,” Bortis added.

Face off at the “Cage” is set for 7:30 p.m. The Hawks will have the doors open at 6 p.m. Anyone entering the arena will need to have proof of double vaccination or a negative COVID test.

The teams will meet in Melfort on Saturday night, also at 7:30 p.m. The same COVID guidelines will be followed.
