Split weekend for the Broncos in northwest jaunt

Oct 3, 2021 | 1:49 PM

It was a bittersweet weekend for the Humboldt Broncos, as they split the weekend during their trip to northwest Saskatchewan. The Broncos fell 6-3 to the Battlefords North Stars Friday, before a dominant 5-1 victory over the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday.

North Stars 6 Broncos 3

The Stars would strike first with Dylan Esau putting it between the pipes on a power play. Alec Saretzky responded for the Broncos back a few minutes later.

Both teams continued to trade goals during the second period as well, with Logan Kurki and Samuel Marburg both having one apiece early in the period and each being followed by North Star goals from Nolan Doell and Jake Southgate.

That is where the North Stars would have the upper hand with three unanswered goals in the third period bringing the final score to 6-3 in favour of the North Stars.

Broncos 5 Klippers 1

Saturday’s game in Kindersley would be a different story as the Broncos would dominate the Klippers in a 5-1 win, even with both teams having the same shots on goal throughout the game.

Lucas Ceccarelli started the Broncos off with the first goal of the game early in the first period. The Klipper’s Jaxon Georget answering back with help from Tylin Hillbig and Cash Arntsen.

After that, it would be all Broncos. They scored four in the second period, including one more from Lucas Ceccarelli, two by Alec Saretzky, and one from Braiden Koran.

Next up in the SJHL will be the SJHL Showcase in Warman with the Broncos first facing off against Weyburn Red Wings on Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m. at the Legends Centre following a battle with the Estevan Bruins at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 6.

Following showcase action, the Broncos will be facing Battleford again with a home and home series with the North Stars coming to the Elgar Petersen Arena on Oct. 9 after a trip up to Battleford on Oct. 8.
