Black Lake outbreak officially declared over

The Athabasca Health Authority has declared a COVID-19 outbreak that began more than 10 weeks ago in Black Lake to be over.

That’s according to primary health care executive director Taiwo Olubanwo, who stated in an email there were about 18 active COVID cases before the onset of the outbreak declaration.

Since July 23, at least 85 COVID-19 cases were reported and effectively managed with the last reported on Sept. 9 in connection with the outbreak.”

“Sadly, we reported a couple of deaths in connection with the outbreak,” he wrote, adding a two-week emergency lockdown which was lifted Aug. 5 was deemed to be effective.

Although the COVID-19 outbreak has been declared over in Black Lake, the COVID-19 vaccine administration is still considerably low in the community as only 18 per cent have been fully vaccinated in Black Lake. Nearly one in five persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in the communities AHA serves.

“While we celebrate the progress made so far in terms of the just rescinded outbreak, we strongly encourage everyone to continue to be cautious, follow all COVID-19 prevention guidelines and get vaccinated,” Olubanwo wrote.

He explained it is imperative to note that the progress made so far is a collaborative efforts. AHA would like to thank their primary care team, the COVID-19 management support team, community stakeholders and partners including but not limited to Indigenous Services Canada, Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority and Saskatchewan Health Authority.
