This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Carrot River Co-op. As part of their recognition for this anniversary, they have decided to help out the fundraiser for the new Carrot River School.

It was an exciting evening for their board of directors, management, and staff able to attend the Friday Night Lights Football game to make their donation of $70,000 to their community’s new school.

This new building will be a major part of the future of their community and they are so proud to be a part of it.

Ward Kewley, general manager of the Carrot River Co-op, said that the decision to make such a sizeable donation towards the new school came because of how the last two years have looked with COVID-19 and how donations like these didn’t happen because of that.

“It was a big discussion that went on with our board of directors as to what we could do,” said Kewley. “The last year and a half of COVID had definitely put a curve on other things that we could or couldn’t do. We decided then that in honour of our 70th anniversary in the community, that we would make a sizeable donation to the new school here in Carrot River.”

And according to Kewley, having that feeling of not being able to give back to the community as much as usual and now getting back to it with this donation, is very important to the Co-op, as that is how they view themselves and their responsibilities within.

“It’s always important to give back, that’s part of being a Co-op. We’re community-minded, community builders and we’ve always been part of it and that’s no different here. We’re part of the community.”

As mentioned, the donation was made at the Friday Night Lights football game, something that was definitely no accident and something that made the experience for the Co-op that much sweeter.

“It was a thrilling, really heartwarming experience to be a part of, to be able to hand out a cheque like that and have different members of the community and school there to receive it,” said Kewley. “We also had members of the football team come and thank us at halftime, so that really made it extremely heartwarming.”

For Kewley and everyone else who is part of that Co-op, last Friday night will definitely go in the history books and one that Kewley mentioned is currently a record holder.

“It’s probably the largest donation we’ve ever done,” said Kewley. “It was a great evening and it’s exciting to know that there’s a new school coming to our community and it’s really exciting to know that there’s that spirit right there in the community.”
