Safe Communities Humboldt and Area prepares for newcomers winter preparation session

Oct 6, 2021 | 1:00 PM

For people who may be unfamiliar with winter conditions, Safe Communities Humboldt and Area is offering a winter preparedness course.

Shari Hinz, executive director with Safe Communities Humboldt and Area, said that the program is partnership with the Humboldt Regional Newcomers Centre and will focus on helping newcomers adjust to the winter climate in Saskatchewan.

“We have partnered with them since the inception of the program to offer these clinics to individuals who are new to our community, province, country, who haven’t experienced a Saskatchewan winter before or any winter weather conditions before,” Hinz told northeastNOW.

Attendees will learn about heating their homes safely, winter travel safety, proper clothing, signs of frostbite/hypothermia, and child safety.

To help families who lack adequate winter clothes, Humboldt and Area Safe Communities is also looking for gently used winter clothing and accessories.

Hinz said they are looking for children’s winter boots, jackets, ski pants, and snowsuits, also adult clothing, boots or jackets and accessories such as snow shovels, snow brushes, ice scrapers, and any other winter accessories people are willing to donate in new or gently used condition.

Donations can be made to the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre at 636 Ninth Street and will be accepted until Oct. 12.

Donations will be distributed at the preparedness session and later be available at the Newcomers Centre.

Hinz also stressed the importance of winter safety for all Saskatchewan residents.

Some tips to keep everyone safe this winter, include:

  • Keeping chimneys clear to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning;
  • Dressing properly for the weather;
  • Heating home safely;
  • Checking road conditions prior to travelling.

The event will be held at Carlton Trail College on Oct. 13 both in person and virtually.

The in-person event runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The virtual event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
