Melfort’s annual fall clean up week begins

The Department of Works and Utilities will hold its annual fall clean-up from Oct. 9 through Oct. 16.

Melfort’s city clerk, Marley Seymour, said this week is to maintain the appearance of the city.

“The city implemented the week to encourage residents to clean up their house and yard to keep our city looking great.” Seymour said.

In addition to promoting pride in lawns, homes, and the city as a whole, the city encourages residents to take pride in their community.

“I think it takes everybody to do their part and lets keep making the city look beautiful.” Seymour said.

The Department of Works and Utilities will be picking up leaves, grass clippings, and tree limbs throughout the week on garbage days.

It is required that these items be placed in a clear bag and that branches be trimmed to 4 inches or less in length before they can be picked up.

Residents of Melfort may also drop off household garbage and yard waste for free this year at the sanitary landfill during fall clean up week.

Items accepted free of charge include household garbage, small broken appliances, furniture, mattresses/box springs, yard refuse and small construction material.

Despite being able to drop off other items, there will be a charge for items such as tires, demolition material, contaminated soil, hazardous waste, freon-containing appliances, and asbestos-containing items.

Household garbage collection will continue to happen as usual.

The landfill is open from 9:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. from Monday to Saturday including the holiday Monday.

Weather permitting, the compost site will be open for residents to drop off biodegradable materials like garden waste, leaves, and grass.

Items dropped off directly at the landfill or compost site are not required to be in a clear plastic bag.
