Mustangs down Ice Wolves to make it four wins in a row

Oct 9, 2021 | 9:06 AM

The Melfort Mustangs continue to be one of the hottest teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League after their big 6-2 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Mustang forward Ben Tkachuk had three points on the night, which included scoring the second goal of the game, and adding two assists. He said as a team, and individually, it was probably the best they’ve played this season.

“Just rolling four lines all night long,” Tkachuk said. “Getting everyone involved and rolling in waves, it’s going to break teams down and it’s going to help us, and it’s going to help us win a championship.”

Curtis Hammond opened the scoring for the Mustangs almost 12 minutes in, which was quickly followed by Tkachuk’s marker 18 seconds later. Thomas Moore’s first career SJHL goal gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead after 1, a lead they never relinquished.

Marco Lopez scored the lone goal in the second, while Dawson Leroux and Carter Anderson scored in the third to bring things to 6-0 before La Ronge broke the shutout. Jacob Cossette, and Brandon Della Paolera scored for the visiting Ice Wolves in the last three minutes, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Tkachuk said they were happy with their play most of the way, except for the final few minutes.

He said confidence in the room is high with a four game winning streak going, but they know they have to continue working.

“We’ve got a pretty good club, got some good leaders in there,” he said. “I think we’ll be able to go into La Ronge tomorrow and get two points, and get us to five [in a row].”

Puck drops tomorrow in La Ronge at 7:30, the pre-game show on 105CJVR with Mat Barret begins at 7:15 p.m.
