North Stars seek bounce-back win against Broncos

Oct 9, 2021 | 2:35 PM

Giving up a two-goal lead late in the game is a tough blow for any hockey club, bowever, the Battlefords North Stars seem ready to put that behind them.

Following a 3-2 loss to the Humboldt Broncos on Friday, forward Colby Bear said the players were disappointed with the result, but largely satisfied with how they played throughout the game.

“We battled to the end and I thought we played well,” he said. “It’s just those penalties that kept the win from us.”

A pair of cross-checking infractions that occurred less than 40 seconds apart, led to the Broncos tying the game just before the 10 minute mark of the final period. That was the only special teams goal of the game for either team.

Bear opened the scoring with the first SJHL tally of his junior career, and several other chances to score throughout the game.

“It was a good play for us, where [Bradley Blake] dished it to me while I was open in front,” he said. “I’m going to remember that one for a while.”

Tonight’s rematch in Humboldt now has higher stakes for both teams, as the winner of the contest will be atop the division. A week ago, the North Stars were able to top Humboldt 6-3 after a bad loss against the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Bear said the group feels confident and that there’s little they will have to change mentally and strategically.

“Our mindset is going to be the same,” he said. “Get pucks deep to force their defence, [put pressure on them all night].”

Puck drop is 7:30 pm., while fans can listen to the broadcast on CJNB.
