Marguerite Riel Centre to host Truth and Reconciliation learning day Tuesday

Oct 11, 2021 | 8:00 AM

The Marguerite Riel Centre will offer a Truth and Reconciliation learning day on Indigenous culture available to all Melfort residents on Tuesday.

The day will be filled with interactive cultural activities for both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples, according to director of dperations Joanne Yakowec.

“Cultural learning group activity. Having people draw and do work on squares of material kind of what truth and reconciliation day means to them and eventually have them sewn into a big quilt,” Yakowec said.

The day will begin with an opening prayer, Kairos blanket exercise, lunch created by local business Page 7 Catering, cultural learning group activities, dancers, a drum group and closing prayer.

The Kairos blanket exercise explores the relationship between Indigenous peoples’ and non-Indigenous people in Canada. The exercise invites participants to step into the shoes of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples to help participants better understand the impact of colonization.

The goal of this activity is to help people understand why relationships between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous people in Canada are often broken.

The event will take place on Oct. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

To ensure social distancing, attendance is limited to 75 people. There are still spots available for those wishing to attend the event.

All provincial health guidelines are being followed for those in attendance.

Everyone will have to mask. Hand sanitizer will also be available at registration and on all tables.

Registration can be done in person at the Marguerite Riel Centre located at 104 Burrows Ave W, by calling 306-752-4950, or by messaging the Facebook page.
