Beeland Co-op and Loop celebrate two years of zero food waste

Beeland Co-op in Tisdale and Loop is celebrating its second year of eliminating food waste.

Todd Svenson, Beeland Co-op’s general manager, said working with Loop has helped the store to recycle 100 per cent of their food waste.

“They work with farmers in the local area who can use products from our food stores that normally end up in landfills,” Svenson said. “It’s different farmers every day. They rotate and there is a pickup every day. They take it home and use it on their farm.”

Loop’s project manager, Jaime White, said that Beeland Co-op is a very unique partnership.

“Tisdale has a really interesting location for its landfill. They are really close to their landfill. There aren’t a lot of costs to using the landfill, so Tisdale was doing this straight out of the goodness in their heart,” White told northeastNOW.

Loop works with businesses to eliminate or minimize food waste. Farm animals can receive products and those that are unsuitable for animals are composted, but White said the company hopes it won’t come down to that.

“We want food to be sold at the store. Loop is a farm program run by farmers. We track data and provide it back to the stores, so they can order better,” White said.

In Melfort, Loop also works with Cindy’s Independent and Prairie North Co-op.

Loop can be used by businesses looking to use less waste with a minimal change to current processes.

“We want it to be as easy or easier than garbage, to be as cheap or cheaper than garbage. Try it on for size; there is no harm no foul, but we’re pretty sure it will be a good fit for you and your business,” White said.We handle the insurance and risk, as well as the scheduling, so the store does not have to do any extra work.”
