Snow falls in La Ronge as average temperatures set in

A cold front passing though La Ronge overnight left a blanket of snow for residents this morning.

The snow fell across much of Northern Saskatchewan from near Prince Albert to the Northwest Territories border. Climate Change and Environment Canada Meteorologist Sara Hoffman explained rain turned into snow, adding the occurrence is not unusual for this time of year.

“We’ve had a much warmer than normal start to fall,” she said. “We have not been experiencing what is normal. We’re sitting right around that seasonal range right now. We have a daytime high of 6 C forecasted and the normal for this time of year is 8 C. We’re a lot closer to normal right now than we have been in the past few weeks. A little bit of snow in October is certainly not unusual.”

The temperature is forecasted to hit -3 C overnight in La Ronge with a daytime high of 5 C on Wednesday. A low-pressure system from the United States will enter Saskatchewan tomorrow and it has the potential to bring wet and snowy weather.

Thursday will be rainy with a daytime high of 4 C, but sunny skies and higher temperatures are in store for Friday and Saturday. Clouds will roll in on Sunday and there’s a chance of flurries on Monday.

“Early next week, we are looking at a system swinging through that looks like it can bring some snow again, and some cold and gusty winds,” Hoffman said.

The hottest temperature on this day in La Ronge was 17.8 C set in 1988. The coldest record was -12.1 C set in 2002.
