Thanksgiving brings first significant Sask. snowfall of 2021

Some people in Saskatchewan earned their pumpkin pie calories by shovelling snow on Thanksgiving.

According to Environment Canada, localized snow fell in between North Battleford and Meadow Lake and up through to the Alberta border on Monday.

Butch Utley at Brights and Lake estimated his yard received four to five centimetres of heavy, wet snow.

“We had a good covering,” he said. “We got a lot of moisture out of it. I’ve got about an inch of moisture in my rain gauge.”

Butch said the snow started Sunday night and continued until mid-afternoon.

While the snow was melting as it hit the ground, Butch said it accumulated quickly on his deck, forcing him to pull out the shovel for the first time this season.

“It’s quite common for this area for getting snow in October. That’s part of the life.”

Environment Canada officially reported one to two cm of snow on the ground, but photos on social media show quite a bit more fell in the region.

Environment Canada says the province is expected to get another taste of winter starting as early as Wednesday night.
