Air Ronge house declared a total loss after weekend fire

A house in Air Ronge that caught on fire Oct. 9 has been declared a total loss.

La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Keaton Cloud was patrolling the neighbourhood on Saturday when he noticed the flames and called dispatch at 8:44 p.m. Firefighters arrived 10 minutes later and were on the scene for three hours.

Cloud explained nobody was injured during the incident, noting the fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

“Once a fire makes its way into the attic, it takes only minutes for the entire roof structure to become fully involved because there is no drywall protecting the trusses,” he said. “Once firefighters arrived on scene, the roof structure was already beginning to fail so, as a safety precaution, firefighters will not enter a structure if there is a threat of collapse.”

Cloud added the fire started on the deck and made its way through the eaves and into the attic. Firefighters attacked the blaze from the outside and sprayed the house next door to keep it cool as the siding was beginning to melt.

“Protecting the house next to the fire was a top priority once it was determined that the structure on fire was a total loss and was already collapsing,” Cloud said.

larongeNOW reached out to the homeowner, who didn’t want to be interviewed at the time. She did want people to know, however, that a family of four lost their home and everything in it due to either fire, smoke or water damage.

A gofundme account was set up three days ago to assist the family in replacing their belongings. As of Oct. 13, the fundraiser was at $1,585 out of a $5,000 goal.
