Bombers edge Hawks in Nipawin

The Hawks fell 2–1 to the Flin Flon Bombers in Nipawin last night leveling the two Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) rivals season series at a win apiece.

On Sept. 28 Nipawin picked up a 4–1 victory in Flon Flon but the Bombers enacted revenge on Tuesday in front of 482 spectators at the Centennial Arena.

Flin Flon jumped out to a 1–0 lead just 1:04 into the game getting a power play goal from Cole Vardy. Rylan Lefebvre tied the game just past the halfway point of regulation time but 1:27 later Jeremi Tremblay restored the Bombers lead that would stand as the game winning goal.

The Hawks didn’t give up and had several chances to tie the game again, but Cal Schell made 26 stops in the Flin Flon net. Nipawin assistant coach Tad Kozun said the team had their opportunities.

“I thought we did alright,” he said after the game. “We had not a very good first period and then I thought we battled back. If we start on time it could be a different game. We definitely had our chances.”

Chase Hamm made 33 saves in the loss for Nipawin. Landon Hedges and Graeme Patrick picked up assists on Lefebvre’s third goal of the season.

Despite not reaching the scoresheet, second-year forward Alex Johnson generated plenty of offensive spark. Kozun said if the team is going need more from a larger portion of the lineup.

“We’re talking about one guy having his best game, we need three, four, five guys like that every night. It’s a team effort and one guy is not going to win you a bunch of games,” he said.

The Hawks now sit with a record of 5—3, still in third place in the SJHL’s Sher-Wood Division. The team will travel to Weyburn Friday to begin a three-game road trip with stops in Estevan Saturday and Notre Dame on Sunday.

All the games will be broadcasted on Nipawin Rona Hawks Hockey starting with Friday’s contest at 7:15 p.m. for the pregame show with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
