Melfort Public Library holding second annual Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

The Melfort Public Library is once again hosting their Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest, their second annual in light of the pandemic.

Starting last Thursday, Oct. 7, people were allowed to stop by the library and pick up their pumpkin. They were then asked to decorate the pumpkins that must reflect a book character, with carved pumpkins not being accepted simply because they just won’t last.

The pumpkins must be dropped off by this Saturday, Oct. 16, with the pumpkins being voted on by library patrons from Oct. 18–26. The winner will be decided on Oct. 27, with the contestants having to pick up their pumpkins by Oct. 30.

The contest is open to all ages, with first place winning a TJ’s gift certificate, second place winning a Dynasty Theatre gift certificate and third place winning a Family Surprise Pack.

Janice Heavin, assistant librarian at the Melfort Public Library said the contest started last year due to COVID-19 restrictions and has since shuffled its way into this year as well, as a safe and fun program for the community.

“It’s just something that we thought of last year,” said Heavin. “Especially during COVID when we were very limited as to the programs that we were allowed to do, it was just a fun way to get people out and about. Because we weren’t able to do any in-person programming, this was something that we could offer.”

Heavin also said that this program was the perfect solution as it involved everyone in the process and really got to showcase the talent and creativity of all the decorators.

“It actually involved everyone in a way because you could either decorate or vote. All of the patrons that participated last year were so creative,” said Heavin. “The pumpkins were fantastic and it was very hard to vote. It was fun for everyone and that’s what’s important to us.”

Heavin also said that this program was important to the library, as it makes the library as fun as possible and with that, makes kids want to come back and more importantly come back to reading.

“Any time that we can get people through our doors or offer a fun program, these are really important to us,” said Heavin.

And according to Heavin, that was the main goal, plain and simple, to make the library a fun place that people continue to think about and want to come back to.

“It’s just to have fun and to have people come in and keep the library sort of in everyone’s thoughts,” said Heavin. “Of course that’s one of the main things that we’re about here at the library.”
