Broncos finish up busy hockey week with win at home

Oct 17, 2021 | 1:57 PM

It was a tough week for the Humboldt Broncos with two losses at home and a hometown win to cap it off.

Tuesday’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game in Wilcox at the Duncan McNeill Arena on Oct. 12 against the Notre Hounds saw a 2-1 loss.

After the Hounds’ Elliot Dutil lit up the Broncos’ net midway through the first period, the Broncos answered back with a Lucas Ceccarelli goal. Even with 41 shots on Hounds’ goaltender Austin Elliott, the Broncos failed to capitalize after Kevin Anderson’s game-winning goal midway through the second.

Next up would be a trip to Yorkton to kick off a home and home with the Terriers on Oct. 15.

Two quick goals from the Terriers against Liam Stevens in the Broncos net would put the Terriers up 2-0 less than a minute into the first period.

However, that would be all they would manage as Stevens held his own for the rest of the 59 minutes of play.

A short-handed goal in the first from Ethan Zielke is all the Broncos would get on the offensive for another 2-1 loss for Humboldt.

They would make up some ground at home with a 3-1 win at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA) on Oct. 16.

LeRoy’s Conner McGrath would add another two points to his opening season with the Broncos with goals midway through the first and third. This would be another week topping the Humboldt leaderboard for McGrath with seven goals and 12 assists so far in the last 11 games this season. McGrath and fellow Bronco Alec Saretzky are not only top scorers for Broncos but also currently top of the SJHL leaderboard.

Ceccarelli would also add another goal as well to his collection with a power-play goal midway through the first period. He now sits fifth on the Bronco’s leaderboard with seven goals and three assists in his last 10 games and 23rd overall in the league.

Staying rested is key for the Broncos, Ceccarelli told northeastNOW, as they will have another busy week coming up.

Even with the Terriers scoring first at home, Ceccarelli said they were ready to go on Saturday night.

“We’re hitting them pretty deep in their zone on the kill, didn’t give them a chance to set up there and I think that was the key on the kill and power play we just kept the puck moving and things happening.”

Too often this season the Broncos have been down by one, he said. Going into Wednesday’s game at the EPA against La Ronge, Ceccarelli said they need to ride the winning momentum and come out harder.

The Broncos will be finishing the week with another home and home, this time with a trip to Melfort to take on the Mustangs on Oct. 22 before they meet at the EPA on Oct. 23.

With 14 games under their belts by the end of the month, including eight home games, five of which requiring over two hours of travel time one way, head coach Scott Barney said the guys are excited to hit the ice and coaching staff are checking in on them.

“The guys haven’t played a lot of hockey in a couple of years so I think you’re gonna see mistakes some nights, but I think as the season goes along, I think the guys are just excited to play hockey,” Barney told northeastNOW.
