The Battlefords North Stars are well represented with two players recognized in this week’s SJHL Players of the Week.

Steven Kesslering was named MVP of the Week, while Colby Bear was given Rookie of the Week honours following a memorable last seven days for each player.

SGEU MVP of the Week, Steven Kesslering

Kesslering scored a goal and five points in just two games last week for the Stars, starting with a one-goal, one-assist performance in a 4-1 Battlefords’ win over Melfort on Wednesday, followed by a three-assist night on Saturday, in the Stars’ 10-3 thrashing of the Ice Wolves in La Ronge.

Now in his third year in the league, Kesslering was quick to credit the chemistry with teammates for his hot start, along with the growth and opportunity that comes with experience.

“I think a lot of [the success] has to do with my linemates,” Kesslering said. “The guys I’ve been playing with have been great to play alongside, and now coming out for my third year in the league, I guess I have a bit more confidence too. Being a bit bigger and stronger than some of the younger guys as well also helps.”

Kesslering currently leads the North Stars in scoring, while sitting tied for second overall in the league scoring race with 16 points.

Bear, who had a goal in Melfort, and then another two against the Ice Wolves, has now scored five goals through his first five games in the SJHL. He too shared credit for his standout play with his teammates for their example, as well as the support his routine and family back home provide.

“I try to keep my routine and keep my game as simple as possible — just sticking with it, working hard in practices and learning as much as I can,” Bear said. “Learning from my teammates and the coaches has helped as well, with a lot of support from back home from family and the community I’m from, Peguis First Nation. That’s really helped me a lot too.”

In addition to the North Stars’ duo, also taking home league recognition Tuesday were Forward of the Week, Ben Tkachuk (Melfort Mustangs), Defenceman of the Week, Brayden Koch (Melfort Mustangs), and Goaltender of the Week, Austin Elliott (Notre Dame Hounds).
