NBCHS Vikings ready for playoffs Friday

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) senior football team are all set to make their playoff debut Friday in Saskatoon.

At 3-2, the Vikings finished the regular football season as the second seed overall in their conference, and will be looking to carry on their stellar play of late into their postseason opener against a somewhat familiar foe in the form of Aden Bowman Collegiate.

The Vikings opened their season with a 14-7 victory against Aden Bowman, though as head coach of the Comp, Mike Humenny points out, they must be ready to make adjustments as teams change throughout the season.

“I think both teams are much different right now than they were at the start of the year, so we’re going to use some of the things that worked well for us in that game, but we also have some new strategies to employ as well,” Humenny said. “As the season goes on, teams get better and I know Aden Bowman is very well coached, so we’ll have to be physically and mentally ready for tomorrow night.”

Aden Bowman finished the campaign just a win back of NBCHS at 2-3 on the year.

Humenny said a big key to determining the Vikings’ success this post-season will be their disciplined play defensively, which has been the backbone to their identity all season.

“As a coaching staff, I know we’ve been very impressed with the way our defence has played from the get-go, and we’re counting on them to continue that and do some big things come the playoffs,” he said.

Offensively, the coach added they’ve also been able to adjust well to different schemes through the season, which should only bode well in Friday’s contest.

Friday’s game will be played at SMF Field in Saskatoon with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The winner will move on to face the victor of Bishop James Mahoney High School and Marion Graham Collegiate next weekend.
