JPII senior boys take volleyball gold in Moose Jaw

It was a weekend of dominance for the John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) senior boys volleyball team, who took home a gold medal in Moose Jaw.

Suiting up for eight matches on the weekend, the team posted a tournament-best, 8-0 record, with six of their eight wins coming against fellow 4A teams, on their way to the top of the podium.

Head coach of the senior boys, Shelly Fransoo, said she could not be more proud of the team, not only for their success, but for their hard work that led to the wins and end result.

“Whether it was the six on the court, or the eight we had on our bench at a given time, there was 110 per cent effort from everyone this weekend,” she said. “It was really a full team effort and a feel-good tournament in terms of our team cohesiveness.”

The standout showing in Moose Jaw is only the latest highlight for the senior boys Crusaders this year, who have posted a 34-3 record through 37 matches this season.

Fransoo said after last year’s high school sports were cancelled, just being able to see the team back out on the court and able to play the game they enjoy once again has been something special this season.

“Just to see these athletes able to get back out there again and to see those smiles out there, I can’t even describe how great it is to be back inside the gym and to see these athletes able to do what they love,” she said. “They get to have the full high school experience again, not only on an academic level but on an extracurricular level as well, which is important for a well-rounded high school experience.”

The Crusaders senior boys will return to action next weekend at North Battleford Comprehensive High School’s home tournament, across town.

The team will then have one more stop in Humboldt the week after that, before advancing to regionals in Saskatoon with a chance to punch their ticket to provincials in Moose Jaw, the last weekend in November.
