La Ronge U13 team new addition to North East Minor Hockey League

The La Ronge Minor Hockey Association has entered a peewee team (U13) into the North East Minor Hockey League for the first time.

The team of 15 players were in Tisdale and Nipawin for their first two league games this weekend. They won 17-2 against Tisdale White on Oct. 23 and 26-0 against Nipawin Black on Oct. 24.

“We did very well,” said La Ronge Minor Hockey vice-president Thomas Sierzycki. “We are looking forward to the development this will bring our kids, as well as having the same opportunity as kids in the south do.”

Since the La Ronge U13 team is new to the league, many of the home games this season will occur either in La Ronge, Kinistino or Birch Hills. Sierzycki explained the team will travel every weekend, which could only be done with the support of parents and volunteers.

Another team called La Ronge Midget 89ers consisting of under-18 youth from the tri-communities already competes in the North East Minor Hockey League.

“We are hoping next year to expand to bantam to provide the bantam opportunities, then in the future we will look at the younger players,” Sierzycki said. “At this point, we are looking at peewees, next year hopefully it will expand to bantam, and then we will see where it goes.”

Sierzycki mentioned there is a second peewee team in La Ronge consisting of another 15 or so players. Like teams in other local minor hockey divisions, they are focused on tournaments rather than league play. Tournaments are expected to begin in December.

“We want to thank, of course, not only the coaches and the team managers, but the parents that are involved, as well as sponsorships from a number of groups including Electric Waves who donated an iPad, Harbour Inn that is giving us room rates for visiting teams, Dairy Queen who is providing team meals, as well as RONA La Ronge for giving financial contributions to make this possible,” Sierzycki said.
