Recruitment to begin soon for nine new firefighters in tri-community

Oct 25, 2021 | 12:48 PM

The La Ronge Regional Fire Department is seeking nine individuals to join their team.

“Becoming a firefighter in your community is a hugely rewarding and unique way to serve your community,” said fire chief Keaton Cloud. “Joining a fire department gives people a sense of pride, opportunity to build friendships and another family within the fire department, and allows for career growth.”

There are currently 21 people involved with the fire department, but there is a capacity for 30. In the past year, Cloud explained they lost several firefighters due to them leaving for jobs in other communities or returning to school.

He noted all firefighters in North America are trained to the same standard whether you’re a volunteer or full-time firefighter. In the tri-communities, firefighters are compensated for the calls they attend because not all employers will cover their wage if they need to leave work to attend to a call.

“Being a firefighter takes a lot of time commitment,” Cloud said. “You’ll miss birthdays, holidays and it will challenge you both mentally and physically, but it will also be the most rewarding time of your life protecting your community.”

Firefighters are on call 24 hours, seven days per week as fires occur both during the day and at night.

The application period opens Nov. 1 and closes Dec. 31. Applications to join can be found here.
