Cumberland College implements vaccine and negative testing policies

Cumberland College has announced its new vaccine and testing guidelines for all people entering the facility.

In response to the growing number of delta-variant COVID cases in Saskatchewan, new measures are being implemented.

Employees, students, board members and visitors must provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result before Dec. 10.

Rebecca Cross, Manager of Safety and Institutional Development, said students and staff safety are the college’s top priority.

“For our students and staff, we know vaccination is a key element in the protection from COVID-19. We felt this policy makes sense,” she said.

To be considered fully vaccinated by a two-dose vaccine such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Moderna, an individual must receive their first dose by Oct. 29. Nov. 26 is the deadline for the second dose.

Unvaccinated students will be allowed on campus if they have a negative test result every seven days.

“We understand that people may choose not to get vaccinated, and we will have the option of providing a negative test to ensure continued access to campus,” she said.

It is recommended that college students keep an eye out for more information about testing policies as they become available. Testing policies have been communicated to employees.

“We are still working out all of the fine details,” Cross added. “Employees will have to pay for the test.”

College officials said they would also follow public health orders and implement additional safety protocols to keep the campus as safe as possible.

According to Cross, it is important to remember these new measures are not punitive to those who opt not to take the vaccine.

“We are just trying to provide the safest environment for students and ensure that our courses and programs continue with the least interruption possible.”
