NBCHS senior boys kick off home volleyball tournament Friday

Vikings school spirit is on full display Friday, and will be this weekend, at North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS), as the senior boys volleyball team host their annual home tournament at the high school.

While the home tournament is always a special occasion at the high school, this weekend marks the team’s first since 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Head coach, Shawna Sturk said the team has been “very excited” heading into the day’s action, to get back in front of the home crowd, and be able to play in the presence of friends and family once again.

“It’s the first time in two years being able to host, so we’re really looking forward to it,” she said. “We have nine teams total who will attend our tournament, and we’re really grateful we’re able to go through with it. There’s a lot of buzz around the school and people wanting to come, so we should have lots of fans in attendance and lots of support, which is going to be great.”

A very young team this year, the Vikings senior boys team features just a single Grade 11, with eight Grade 10s and one Grade 9. However, despite the heavily youthful look, Sturk said it’s been great to see the team come together this year for what should be their first of many to grow together.

“It’s going to be a great start up for the next couple of years for these boys to play together and that’s something I’m super excited about,” she said.

The team’s first game was at 1 p.m. this afternoon, versus John Paul II Collegiate’s B Team, with their next at 2 p.m. versus St. Walburg. The final game Friday will be played at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., depending on where the team finishes in their pool. Games will then resume throughout the day Saturday.

Nine teams total are in attendance at the tournament.
