Firefighters respond to back-to-back calls Saturday in La Ronge

Firefighters were busy Saturday with two different calls in the afternoon.

According to La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Keaton Cloud, the first call came in at 3:18 p.m. about a possible structure fire along Riese Drive. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but there was fire damage to the property owner’s trailer and flames began to compromise the roof structure.

All occupants made it out of the trailer safely and the fire is not considered suspicious. Cloud noted the neighbour’s trailer suffered minor heat damage to the siding.

“As the weather cools, residents should make sure their chimneys are properly cleaned for the season, and remember to not leave fires, heaters, or any open flame unattended,” he said.

While firefighters were attending to the trailer on Riese Drive, another call came in about a potential natural gas leak at Giant Tiger. Firefighters then split into two divisions, one division travelled to Giant Tiger and began investigating.

Cloud explained as a standard procedure, firefighters disabled the gas to the building and vented the store. Firefighters determined the cause of call to be a battery for an electric pallet jack that was boiling over and causing the smell of rotten eggs.

After the safety of the public was determined not to be at risk, the gas supply was restored and the store opened later in the day.
