Hawks complete weekend sweep of Ice Wolves

Nipawin continued their success against La Ronge Saturday night blanking the Ice Wolves 4-0. The Hawks have beaten the Ice Wolves in all four games the teams have played so far this season.

Coming off a 5-4 shoot out win Friday, the Hawks grabbed the lead on home ice and never looked back in the rematch. Rookie Hawks forward Carter Wickenheiser capped the scoring in the third period with Nipawin’s first shorthanded goal of the season. He said after the game the team was pleased with the weekend’s results.

“We went through a little bit of a tough stretch, it was good to get back in the win column on Friday, but that wasn’t the way we wanted to win. Tonight was the way we want to win, we have to keep this going,” Wickenheiser said.

Carson Dobson scored his sixth goal of the season in the first period, the 19-year-old was awarded a penalty shot in the opening minutes of the game but couldn’t beat Dawson Smith. Dobson did find the back of the net at the 13:06 mark. Rylan Lefebvre scored his fifth of the year in the second period, Andrew Schaab added his fifth of the season as well in the third. Lefebvre’s and Schaab’s goals were scored on a Hawks powerplay, the team scored four goals with the man advantage on the weekend compared to the Ice Wolves one. La Ronge was unable to score on six powerplays on Saturday including a 1:43 of five-on-three powerplay time. Wickenheiser said the club’s special teams were key in both games.

“The penalty kill was unreal tonight; it was a big part of our win. We took a lot of penalties tonight and the penalty was a huge benefit,” he said.

The Hawks finished the game two for five with the extra attacker.

Smith made 30 saves in the loss, Nipawin netminder Chase Hamm was credited with just 11 saves for his second Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) shutout.

The Hawks sit with a record of 8-7-0-2 and have 18 points, the team is tied with Notre Dame for seventh overall in the SJHL standings. The Hawks will host the Hounds on Friday at the Centennial Arena in their next action. Wickenheiser said the team will enjoy a successful weekend and get back to work Monday.

“It feels good, everyone is happy, everyone is excited and looking to forward to next week so we can keep building off this,” he concluded.
