Families will have something to look forward to later this month when the “Lights of Joy” event kicks off again in Battleford.

The gazebo and the 16 trees at the Historic Lions Park on 22nd Street in downtown Battleford will be lit up with festive decorative lights for the start of the holiday season.

The event will take place Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. People are invited to visit the display and enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate and some popcorn. The lights will be turned on at 6:30 p.m.

The Battleford Community Spirit group is once again organizing the project.

“People can come down and visit,” said Coun. Judy Pruden who is one of the volunteers in the effort. “We hope to have some Christmas carols playing. There will be some music.”

Plans are also to have a fun mini photo booth for the children at the small gathering.

Now in its third year, the event was called the “Lights of Hope” display for 2020 to give people optimism during the pandemic.

Once the holiday lights turn on again later this month, they will brighten up the streets over the winter to add some cheer to the community.

Many people made $2 donations to purchase light bulbs for the illumination display. A number of local businesses, as well as the Town of Battleford and Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. are also supporting the initiative.

Any funds raised will benefit the non-profit Battleford Community Spirit Group to help them hold future community events in the town.

Pruden said there has always been a positive response from the community for the “Lights of Joy” project since it was introduced in 2019.

“It’s been overwhelming,” she said. “We have had so much support. The single light bulbs are being sold at the downtown businesses, and at the Discovery Co-op [Food Store and Gas Bar in Battleford]… It’s just been a really heartwarming response for sure.”
