Loss on the road does little to dampen Broncos spirit

Even with a loss in Estevan over the weekend, that was just a blip on the radar for the Humboldt Broncos as they held onto first place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

The Broncos have now earned 30 points in 20 games with Estevan following behind with 25 points in 17 games.

Head coach of the Broncos, Scott Barney, told northeastNOW they have to win on the road if they want to hold onto the top spot, which they did this weekend.

“To win two of three, especially pulling out Estevan who’s got an elite club over, that was big for us.”

The Broncos are on the road again this weekend with the La Ronge Icewolves having their own set of challenges for the green and gold.

“They got a physical team and a little smaller rink so we gotta be ready to go.”

This week’s SJHL action started off with the Broncos’ 4-0 win in Weyburn on Nov. 5 with Rayce Ramsay earning the first shutout of his SJHL career.

This was followed by the unfortunate 6-2 loss in Estevan on Nov. 6 and the 4-2 rematch win on Nov. 7 leaving the Broncos with a 2-1 record to finish off the week.

Coming up against two elite teams in the league, Barney said he was happy with the player performance, especially since they are facing a lack of defense at the moment with Nicksha Eric and Quinn Myles both out of the lineup.

Numerous green and gold players lit up the scoreboard this past weekend with five Broncos now gracing the top scorer stats for the league, four of which in the top six positions.

Broncos forward, Matthew Perkins, once again had a strong week on the ice with four goals and four assists added to his points total. He is tied with Battlefords’ Jake Southgate for sixth place in the league’s skater standings with 22 points, 11 goals and 11 assists each. Alec Saretzky added five assists to his total and holds onto fourth place in the top skater list with 25 points.

On the other side of the roster, rookie forward Rhett Gibson scored his first two goals of his SJHL career on the road.

The Broncos have also been strong on the penalty kill, said Barney, and they have had to be since they are also top of the league in penalty minutes. They broke the 600 penalty minute mile marker this past week with the next highest team being Weyburn with 448 penalty minutes.

“We want our guys to play physical,” said Barney following the home game on Nov. 2. “We just don’t want any unnecessary penalties when we don’t need them…We don’t want to be undisciplined, we’d rather guys take a physical penalty than making an undisciplined kind of call.”

Following a trip to La Ronge for a two-game series on the road, the Broncos will be back on home ice against the Notre Dame Hounds on Nov. 17 followed by Nipawin coming to the Elgar Petersen Arena on Nov. 20.
