North Stars cap home stand with divisional matchup versus Klippers

Nov 9, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Coming off a thrilling overtime win Saturday against the division-rival Hounds, the Battlefords North Stars will return to home ice Tuesday, to welcome another divisional foe to town, in the Kindersley Klippers.

Team outlook

The North Stars (11-6-2) enter play Tuesday second in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, and fourth overall in the league standings. The team’s 24 points are tied with third-place Flin Flon, though the Bombers do hold a game in-hand.

With a 9-8-1 record, the Klippers sit third in the division and sixth overall, with 19 points. Following a bit of a slow start to the year, Kindersley have been among the hottest teams in the league of late, with a 3-0-1 record over their last four games.

Both teams are 6-3-1 over their last 10 overall, having split the opening two games of the season-series, with a win apiece.

Leading Scorers

North Stars leading scorer, Jake Southgate is coming off a two-point night Saturday, which included scoring the overtime game winner over Notre Dame. Tied for sixth in the league scoring race with 22 points, Southgate’s 11 goals are also a club-best.

Steven Kesslering, who has four goals over his last four games and 20 points on the year, and Dylan Esau, who has four assists over his last four with 19 points, round out the top three in scoring for the Battlefords.

Tylin Hilbig leads all Klippers with seven goals and 14 points through 18 games this year, as the lone Kindersley player to eclipse double digits in points.

Veteran defenceman, Mark Snarr and forwards Jaxon Georget, Noah Lindsay and Matthew Mazzocchi are tied for second-through fifth in Klippers’ team scoring, with nine points each.

North Stars hometown boys, Zane Florence (#3), and Jake Southgate (#21) each scored Saturday, and will be counted on to help lead the way on home ice versus Kindersley. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Special Teams

Both struggling a bit of late on the special teams, the Battlefords power play holds a slight edge on Kindersley’s, as the Stars are clicking at 16.4 per cent (7th overall) to the Klippers’ 10.7 per cent (11th). On the penalty kill though, it is Kindersley’s 80.3 per cent efficiency (7th) that gets the better of the North Stars’ 72.5 per cent (12th).

Goaltending

In goal for the Battlefords, 17-year-old Lowen Kenyon will make his SJHL debut Tuesday. A product of Lloydminster, Alta., Kenyon already has two games of ‘Junior A’ experience under his belt, with the Olds Grizzlies of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) last year.

At the other end, veteran Matthew Pesenti is likely to get the start for the Klippers. Having played 12 of his team’s opening 18 games, Pesenti has posted a 5-6-1 record with a 3.10 goals-against average and .902 save percentage.
