Participants needed for information session about dogs

Tri-community residents are invited to attend a research session on Nov. 24 regarding dogs in the area.

It’s part of the La Ronge Regional Animal Research and Advisory Circle and is composed of faculty from the U of S’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as representatives from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, La Ronge, Air Ronge, Northern Animal Rescue and local health services. The circle was launched in September 2018 and is no reaching the end of data collection.

“We’ve already done about 25 interviews and we received a lot of information from adults in the tri-communities,” said Dr. Jordan Woodsworth, who is leading the study. “With this sharing circle that’s coming up, we’re looking to communicate some of what we are finding from these interviews with folks who attend and then get people’s feedback to see if it’s in line with what they’ve experienced.”

Information already collected about dogs include thoughts on dogs, the place of dogs and the role of dogs in the tri-communities, as well as how dogs and humans interact, issues with dogs and positive aspects about living alongside dogs.

The session later this month will be two to three hours starting at 6 p.m. A light meal will be provided and transportation and child care is also available. Woodsworth hopes to see representation from each of the tri-communities with about 15 people in attendance.

“The whole objective of this project is to do something that’s useful for the community,” she said. “We have been lucky to have several people who are really engaged from the tri-communities who have been part of this research project and have been helping us drive it from the beginning. It has really been a true community collaboration and it has been really rewarding in that way.”

The plan would be to deliver some sort of end product, whether that’s a report or it takes the shape of something else, that has yet to be decided upon. Organizers are also planning to create an educational program targeting youth and is curriculum aligned.
