JPII senior girls ready for regionals this weekend

Coming off their second-straight gold medal showing last weekend in Melfort, the John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) senior girls volleyball team will head to regionals this weekend in Saskatoon.

The team lost just a single match in their most recent tournament win, finishing second in their pool overall before heading into a crossover game against Yorkton who they beat in two-straight sets to advance to the semi-finals.

Taking on a challenging Humboldt team in the semis, the Crusaders’ girls bent a bit to start, but didn’t break, showing strong resiliency to bounce back in the final two sets to punch their ticket to the weekend finals.

“We came out a bit slower and got off to a bit of a tough start in the first set against Humboldt, so we ended up losing that first set, but then we fought back and were able to take the second and then third set as well, to make the final,” head coach Cherelle Cadrain said. “So it was really great just to see the team stick with it and get rewarded for their effort there.”

Riding the wave of momentum, in the final the team then came out strong to defeat Martensville in straight sets, holding their opponent to just 12 points in the first set and 14 in the second, to take the tournament with a gold medal.

Cadrain said heading into regionals this weekend, the team can take a lot of the things that made them successful to heart, knowing they have the potential to beat any team on a given day.

“We really came out strong in that final game, severing well, and we were really passing well too,” Cadrain said. “I think just having played some 5A teams earlier in the year, and then the success of late as well, has only helped our group in the long run to reach their potential. They know they’re capable of competing against anyone and I think it’s really developed our team well.”

With now two-straight tournament wins, Cadrain said the team is ready for whatever challenge might lie ahead at regionals this weekend.

Regionals will be held this Saturday, Nov. 13 at Saskatoon’s Marion Graham Collegiate. The Crusaders will play their opening game bright and early at 10 a.m. Saturday versus Meadow Lake with games to follow at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the five-team round robin.

The top three teams from the weekend will then advance to senior girls provincials in Moosomin the following weekend.

The JPII senior boys will play their regionals in Saskatoon the weekend of Nov. 20 with a shot at provincials the weekend of Nov. 26-27 in Moose Jaw.
