Remembrance Day service in La Ronge to be held at cenotaph

Nov 10, 2021 | 4:03 PM

A Remembrance Day service will be held at 11 a.m. at the cenotaph outside the Town of La Ronge office.

That’s according to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371 President Shaune Lapworth, who said those wishing to attend the 30 to 40-minute ceremony should arrive shortly before then. Some speeches will be made at the service, wreaths will be laid and at 11:11 a.m. the Last Post will be played.

“It’s important for a lot of reasons,” Lapworth said about Remembrance Day. “Generally, it’s just to honour and remember past military and service people that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Maybe they didn’t come back or they came back with some mental issues, but it’s certainly a small thing to remember on Nov. 11 for people who had to suffer through World Wars or conflicts.”

For those unable to make it to the ceremony tomorrow, Lapworth recommends residents to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. wherever they might be. Environment Canada is forecasting -5 C tomorrow with a chance of flurries, so attendees should dress for the weather.

Lapworth also encourages residents who can’t make it to tune in to the live Remembrance Day ceremony aired from Ottawa.

“We were going to do it indoors, but we decided just with provincial events, we’d just be safer than sorry, so we’re going to go outside again this year,” he said. “It’s not ideal, but it’s a very small sacrifice to suffer through the cold for 30 minutes.”

Social distancing will be in effect at the service and attendees are required to wear a mask. Municipal services in Air Ronge and La Ronge will be closed for the stat holiday.
