Stars top Klippers 3-1 to take third straight

Coming off a 3-1 victory over the Klippers Tuesday at home, the Battlefords North Stars traveled to Kindersley to repeat the feat Friday, taking another 3-1 win over their division-rivals to the south.

Dylan Esau opened the scoring for the Stars just 41 seconds into the first period, making it 1-0 on his fifth of the season, on a quick wrister in front.

While the scoring came early, it would not come often through the first two-thirds of the night. Kindersley’s Matt Pesenti stopped 29 of 31 shots against on the evening, including a handful of ten-bell saves throughout the second period, as the Stars outshot the Klippers 15-5 in the frame.

Not nearly as busy as his counterpart at the other end, Michael Harroch was just as strong for the Stars none-the-less, stopping all nine shots he faced through 40 minutes, and 17 of 18 he faced total on the night.

Following a scoreless second period, Emmett Wurst cashed in for his seventh of the season – and second in his last three games – on a quick shot from the slot, under the goalie’s pad-and-in to give the Battlefords an all-important insurance marker at 2-0.

Kindersley did break through for one of their own, when leading goal and point scorer, Tylin Hilbig scored his eighth of the year, to make it 2-1, through a maze of traffic in front of the crease.

However, when the chips were down, with two crucial penalty kills in the back-half of the third, the North Stars PK unit stood tall to kill them both off and keep the team in the lead, en route to a perfect 3-for-3 night shorthanded.

Riley Little’s second of the year made it 3-1 Stars, capping the evening with a much-needed insurance marker into the empty net, with just two minutes to go in regulation.

With the win, the North Stars now hold a 3-0-1 record against the Klippers this year, and move to within a point of the Estevan Bruins for second overall in the league standings, though the Bruins do hold two games in-hand.

The Stars will now return home to play Nipawin Saturday night at the ACC in North Battleford, in search of their fourth-straight win.

Due to the Riders’ game being broadcast on 1050 CJNB, Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 93.3 The Rock. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
