The Nipawin Hawks fell 7-3 Friday on home ice to the Notre Dame Hounds in a penalty filled affair.

The Hounds were gifted 14 powerplays in the game scoring on five of them, Nipawin had four chances with the man advantage. Brody Wilson scored the Hawks third goal in the third period while shorthanded, the Birtle, Manitoba product said some nights everything goals wrong, but the team can learn from the lopsided loss.

“It was a tough one tonight,” he told northeastNOW. “It wasn’t really the outcome we were hoping for, but I think we learned a few things and we will be ready to go tomorrow (Saturday) night.”

Notre Dame led 3-1 after the first period and 7-2 going to the third. The Hawks were able to build off the final 20 minutes, something Wilson said the team wanted to do.

“That was definitely the message going into the third, build on it, get some momentum going into Saturday and just get better every shift,” Wilson said.

Notre Dame’s Kevin Anderson led the Hounds offence scoring three times, twice in the first period on the powerplay.

Evan Bortis and Joel Mabin scored the other Nipawin goals, Mabin’s fourth of the year was scored on a penalty shot.

Harmon Laser-Hume made his Nipawin debut in the Hawks net after being called up to the club from the Creston Valley Thunder Cats of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the 18-year-old allowed four goals and suffered the loss, Chase Hamm came on in relief and allowed three, Notre Dame had 30 shots overall. Ryley Osland stopped 32 of 35 Nipawin shots in the win.

The Hawks will look to rebound in North Battleford in their first visit with the North Stars this season. Wilson said the quick turnaround is the best thing after an off night.

“We had a few injuries tonight unfortunately but tomorrow night we’ll be looking to get back in the win column,” he concluded.

The game can be heard on 105 CJVR beginning with the pregame show of Nipawin RONA Hawks hockey beginning at 7:15 p.m. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m.
