Busy week begins Tuesday for Hawks

The Nipawin Hawks have a busy week ahead with games against Weyburn, Battleford, and Humboldt.

The Red Wings will make their first visit to the Centennial Arena on Tuesday. The Hawks will look to avenge a 4-1 loss to Weyburn earlier this season. Nipawin hosts the North Stars Friday and will travel to Humboldt on Saturday for a date with the Broncos.

Head Coach Doug Johnson said he’s looking forward to the three tough tests despite having injury troubles throughout the lineup.

“I think it’s going to be good; we’re going to play a few games, we will get some forwards in for Tuesday and make sure we get some guys in better situations to succeed and give ourselves the best chance to win,” Johnson said.

In Saturday’s loss to the North Stars in North Battleford the injury riddled Hawks dressed both Zander Stewart and Josh Morton at forward moving the two from their customary defense positions. The alterations were necessary after top centres Rylan Lefebvre and Kye Whillans were both injured in the Hawks loss to Notre Dame last Friday. The two veterans won’t be available this week either.

The Hawks sit in eighth place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings with a record of 8-9-0-2. The club has a game in hand on seventh place Kindersley and can jump over the Klippers with a win. Johnson said despite a record not up to Nipawin Hawk standards he’s still confident in his players.

“When everything clicks for us we can be as good as anyone in the league,” he said. “We played Estevan pretty good, we lost 3-1 that game if I recall, a couple of the goals against we could have had. We’re there, we just need that spark.”

Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. for all three games this week. Tuesday’s matchup with Weyburn marks the return to the “Cage” for Nipawin product and former Hawk Davis Chorney who was traded earlier this season.

The team has also made every ticket for the game $5. That promotion is good for Tuesday games throughout the season.
