Twin Rivers hosts CurlSask U15/U18 bonspiel

Some of the top young curlers in the region gathered in North Battleford over the weekend, as the local Twin Rivers Curling Club hosted a CurlSask U15/U18 bonspiel.

The tournament was made up of seven teams, total, with three boys teams and four girls teams, from clubs out of Saskatoon, Spiritwood and North Battleford.

Both the boys and girls’ final games came down to the last rock in the eighth-and-final end, with Team Snow prevailing over Team Jones on the boys’ side, both representing the Saskatoon Granite Curling Club.

Team Snow is made up of Rogan Snow (skip), Nathan Roy (third), Cole Hilderman (second), and Evan Roy (lead), with coach, Caden Snow.

On the girls side, Team Taylor from Saskatoon Nutana Curling Club prevailed over Team Kesslering from Saskatoon Granite. Team Taylor features Savanna Taylor (skip), Ava Beausoleil (third), Annika Steckler (second), and Katie Kennedy (lead), with coach, Brian Steckler.

Although she curls competitively with the Nutana-based Taylor team, Ava Beausoleil’s home club is Twin Rivers. Ava’s sister Leah skipped a U15 team from Twin Rivers, but due to lack of U15 entries played in the U18 division, just missing the final.

Team Beausoleil included Leah Beausoleil (skip), Chloe Semeniuk (third), Halie Stockman (second), and Macey Odishaw (lead), with coach, Nicole Beausoleil.

Vice president with the Twin Rivers Curling Club, Doug Fehr, said while the number of teams was a bit lower than years past, due in part to the event being held earlier than usual in an Olympic year, it’s always special to see the next generation of curlers take to the rink for an event like the weekend’s bonspiel.

“It’s the first step for juniors, some of whom might someday become the Kevin Koe’s and the Pat Simmons’ and Robyn Silvernagles’ of the world,” Fehr said.

“For some, these U15/U18 events can be sort of a stepping stone towards advancement in a competitive curler’s career, and it’s always good to see the next generation just involved and enjoying playing the game too.”

Upcoming events

Following last weekend’s bonspiel, the Twin Rivers Curling Club will also be hosting a Sturling Bonspiel this Saturday, Nov. 20. A two-person variation of traditional curling, about 15 teams are already registered for the event with a goal of between 16 and 20 for the tournament, open to all ages.

Dec. 4 the club will also be hosting a CurlSask Prairieland Junior Regional camp, a curling instructional camp that is normally held in the summer, but was cancelled the last two years due to the pandemic. This year, the event is split into several smaller regional camps across the province, including North Battleford.
