Local curler to represent Sask. at Junior Nationals

Nov 17, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Battlefords local, Jack Reid is junior nationals bound.

Reid, who began curling competitively out of North Battleford in his early teens, now serves as lead with Saskatoon’s Team Bernath, who in late October took home a first-place finish at provincials in Tisdale to punch their ticket to junior nationals Nov. 22-27 in Saskatoon.

Reid said he and his teammates could not have been more proud to take first place on the provincial stage, for the chance to represent not only their home communities, but the province of Saskatchewan against the best junior clubs across Canada.

“It was awesome,” Reid said. “We’ve all been competing in these events up to four years, and we’ve been close before, so to finish it off this time, and win provincials was a really good feeling.”

Reid, who is in his first season as a member of Team Bernath, is joined by skip Daymond Bernath, and second David Baum, along with third Bryden Tessier, who is also in his first year with the team.

Together the rink overcame some adversity on the provincial stage to get to where they are now.

After winning the B Event at provincials against Wadena’s Team Pomedli by a 10-7 score, Bernath fell 5-4 in a heartbreaker to open the playoff rounds, at the hands of Martensville’s Team Ede, who had won the A event.

However, the boys from Saskatoon would bounce back quickly to defeat Pomedli again 15-8, to earn a rematch in the final, against Ede. There Bernath then slayed their dragon from earlier in the tournament, defeating Ede 9-4 to top the podium and advance to the national stage.

Reid said now being able to play at junior nationals in Saskatoon – in their home community as a club and just an hour east of the Battlefords – adds another special layer to the tournament this year.

“It’s a bit different than being able to travel somewhere across Canada, but there’s definitely something special about having it here for sure,” he said. “It’ll be nice to be able to see more people I know in the stands and get lots of family and friends out there watching.”

Team Bernath will open their schedule versus Northwest Territories Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.

The team will then play again Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. versus Nova Scotia, Wednesday at 2 p.m. versus Quebec, and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. against B.C.; before wrapping up their qualifiers schedule against Newfoundland at 7:30 p.m.

The playoff rounds will then be determined for play Friday and Saturday.
