MADD, Youth Advisory Committee collaborating on impaired driving campaign

Local organizations are collaborating on a campaign designed to raise awareness to the prevalence of impaired driving in the community.

The Meadow Lake Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have posted mobile signs around the community where impaired drivers have been pulled over and charged by police.

Community Program officer Maryah Walker explained this campaign comes at a time where the YAC expressed their desire to confront the frequency of impaired driving offences.

“In our meetings, we discussed some of the challenges that are impacting youth that they’re seeing that are important to them, and we laid all of those out on the table so that we could do our work around addressing some of those issues,” she said.

“We have a really good partnership with SGI, they connected us with MADD Canada, and that’s how this collaborative work started. We were able to bring the youth’s desire to address the normalization of impaired driving.”

Similar campaigns are also running in other communities such as Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

At a later date in the initiative, residents will have an opportunity to access a digital display online revealing all of the locations in the community where these incidents have occurred.

Currently, there are 12 signs posted at designated sites. More signs are expected to be posted, and will be moved throughout the community to reveal new locations throughout the operation.

The campaign will also include educational and preventative components involving local schools and traffic services .

“We’re going to be reaching out to schools to do presentations on drugs and alcohol impaired driving, as well as collaborating with our combined traffic services section and doing holiday check stops in partnership with the MADD Meadow Lake chapter.”

Walker stated the YAC hopes the campaign will resonate with the community as the holiday season approaches.

“We really hope this campaign reminds community members how prevalent impaired driving is in our community and how dangerous it is for our community to have the high amount of impaired driving that we have,” she said.

“It’s in all of our responsibility and efforts to report impaired drivers. Pull over, call 911, give us the best description of the vehicle, the direction it’s heading and work collaboratively with our detachment to keep our roads and our community safer.”
