Something to build on

Hawks gain point and confidence in shootout loss

Nov 21, 2021 | 1:27 AM

The Hawks clawed a point out of the Humboldt Broncos Saturday night falling 3-2 in a shootout.

Nipawin was wrapping up a three-game week which saw the team beat Weyburn on Tuesday before dropping a 5-2 decision at the hands of the Battlefords North Stars on Friday. The club saved one of their best efforts of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season for the first-place Broncos and first meeting between the two clubs since 2019.

Humboldt opened the scoring early, hometown born defenseman Noah Barlage scored his third goal of the season just 2:35 into the game. Nipawin would respond, Joel Mabin scored his sixth goal of the year from Andrew Schaab and Brody Wilson knotting the game at 1-1 after one period.

The Broncos restored their one goal cushion near the hallway point of regulation, Lucas Ceccarelli beat Harmon Laser-Hume to make the game 2-1. Nipawin tied the game again with just over a minute left in the middle period, Broncos’ goaltender Rayce Ramsay turned the puck over to Alex Johnson allowing the 19-year-old to score his second of the season into a wide-open net.

Neither goaltender budged through the final period forcing overtime with the game still tied 2-2. Both teams had chances to win during the overtime period, but a shootout was needed that Humboldt used to earn the win. Hawk defenseman Liam Bell had a glorious chance to win the game in overtime on an end-to-end rush, but he couldn’t beat Ramsay who finished with 26 saves in the win. Bell said the team was proud of the effort they brought against the Broncos.

“We played great,” the 18-year-old Saskatoon product said after the game. “I thought the boys bought in, everybody from our goalie down to our forwards. I thought everybody had a great game, we played hard and did our thing.”

The Hawks couldn’t beat Ramsay in two tries in the shootout, Schaab and affiliate player callup Braeden Jockims were both stopped, Laser-Hume turned aside Alec Saretzky but both Matthew Perkins and Cage Newans beat the Creston, British Columbia product to secure the Broncos’ 18th victory. Bell said the team must use the evidence from this game as a model for success.

“This brings a lot of tempo to our upcoming games and I think it shows any team can beat any other team in this league right now,” he said.

Nipawin will take Sunday off and then begin preparing for Tuesday’s contest in Flin Flon versus the Bombers. The Hawks won earlier this year at the Whitney Forun, the Bombers have a victory over Nipawin at the Centennial Arena this season as well. Bell said if the team can bring the same will into the divisional matchup the result should be favourable.

“We’re just going to try and play the same game, everybody plays their role, everybody buys into the system, and hopefully it will turn out right,” Bell said.

Tuesday’s game will be broadcasted on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio beginning with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m.
