The Battlefords U15 NorthWest Stars had a weekend to remember, taking home the first-ever Peyton Keller Memorial U15 AA Tournament in Swift Current.

Featuring 10 teams from across Saskatchewan, split into two pools of five, the tournament featured a three-game round robin, with the top teams advancing to the final.

The Stars opened the weekend with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Regina Aces, led by forward Caleb Pockrant, who scored the game-winner with just four seconds to go in regulation time.

Goalie, Nicolas Grunerud backstopped the team to victory in the opening game, while Linken Fisher was awarded player of the game honours, also scoring a goal in the win.

Playing the Winnipeg Bruins in their second game, the Stars improved their tournament record to 2-0 with a 6-3 win, led by a Carter Cole hat trick. Goalie, Nicolas Grunerud picked up his second straight win between the pipes for the team, while Kade Lehman was awarded player of the game honours.

Next up for the team was a first place matchup with the North East Wolf Pack to decide the ‘A Final,’ which saw the Stars edge out the Wolf Pack for a 5-4 victory, with five different goal scorers chipping in.

This time Brady Carr tended the pipes for the win and Carter Cole was awarded player of the game, as the team punched their ticket to the A final.

The Stars met the U15 Yorkton Terriers in the final, who gave the team likely their greatest challenge of the weekend.

After falling behind 3-1 to the Terriers by the end of the first, the Stars showed resilience, scoring three-unanswered goals in the middle period, to take a 4-3 lead into the third.

The Stars would win the championship game by a 7-3 final. Brady Carr, who picked up his second win was also named player of the game.

Head coach, Boyd Wakelin said it was great to see the team’s resiliency pay off in a true team-effort.

“It’s definitely nice to see the kids get rewarded,” he said. “They work so hard not only when showing up for games, but during practices too during the week; that’s where the real work gets put in.

“We have a great group of kids who through-and-through just work extremely hard and are great people too away from the rink, so it’s nice to see them having fun and able to get rewarded,” Wakelin added.

The U15 NorthWest Stars are nearing the midway point of their season, as the team has played 11 of their 31 games with a 7-3-1 record to this point in the season. The Stars will return to action Saturday at home against the Saskatoon Stallions. Puck drop will be at 4:30 p.m.
