AAA Sharks go for fifth-straight win Thursday in Battleford

Almost as if smelling a drop of blood in the water, the Battlefords AAA Sharks have been on feeding frenzy of late, chewing up the opposition in their last four games.

Heading into play Thursday, looking for their fifth win in a row, the team will play their first of what will be a three-game home stand at Battleford Arena, as the Saskatoon Stars come to town.

The winning streak comes after a bit of a tough start to the year that saw the Sharks post just a single win over their opening nine games – though thanks to their recent surge, the team now sits just a couple of points back of Saskatoon for fourth overall in the league standings.

The Sharks’ run of success began with a 3-2 win over first place Swift Current Nov. 14, followed up by a 2-1 victory over Saskatoon last Thursday, Nov. 18. Over the weekend, the Sharks then topped the Weyburn Goldwings in back-to-back wins, 4-0 Friday and 1-0 in a shootout Saturday.

Head coach of the Sharks, Ricci Girolami said it’s been great to see the team really hit their stride of late, and get rewarded for sticking with it through adversity.

“Every time you win, it just builds confidence in the players, and as you get more confident good things happen, which is really nice to see,” he said. “Just with the way they’re working, they’re really coming together as a team.”

Perhaps most impressive about the team’s success has been the different players stepping up each night to lead the way to victory for the team.

Eight different players have scored for the Sharks over their last four games, while each of their two goalies have pitched in shutouts.

Forward Mykayla Pylypow leads the team with two goals and a shootout winner over the winning streak, while Lacey Schneider has two goals as well. Meadow Nordell, Alexie Palchinski, Martine Morelli, Mardi Wagner, Cassidy Peters and Brooklyn Siemens have also chipped in by scoring for the team.

Between the pipes, goalie Emma Backman has two of the four wins, stopping 56 of 58 shots-against in wins over Swift and Weyburn (the latter of which was a shutout); while backup, Taylor Enns posted a 33-save shutout of her own in Sunday’s shootout win.

Through eight games this season, Backman is amongst the goaltending league leaders, with a sparkling 1.60 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Puck drop Thursday versus Saskatoon will be at 6:15 p.m.
